Q: Archive Optimizer Plugin

edited September 2012 in DrivePool
The wiki page for the Archive Optimizer plugin states "Because this plug-in is very specialized, it should generally be used by itself."  Does this mean that all of the standard balancing plugins (file placement, volume equalization, etc) should be disabled?  Or other '3rd party' balancing plugins should not be used?

Comments

  • Good Q - I had the same Q when I read that. I'm not sure whether that means you shouldn't switch on any of the other balancing algorithms or what? Where should archive optimizer go in the list if there are many active?

Also, feels strange to need to use 2x SSD landing drives. would be great to see an option to move a file to the feeder disk and then see it duplicated on the Archive disks.

The answer is not that it can't be used with other plug-ins, it can. But you are going to do that then you have to understand how those other plug-ins might affect your balancing model.

For example, if you use the Scanner's temperature control, your Feeder disk(s) could be flagged as too hot thus negating the effect that you're seeking.

That's the intention behind the advice "it should generally be used by itself". So if you're designating a feeder disk you probably don't want another plug-in coming in and saying, "don't put anything on this disk for reason X and Y", that's all.

Alex - thanks. Also feels strange to need to use 2x SSD feeder disks. would be great to see an option to move a file to the feeder disk and then see it duplicated on the Archive disks. Is that possible?

You are not required to add a minimum amount of feeder disks. The system will work correctly if you don't. In the case of 1 feeder disk and writing a new duplicate file (with real-time duplication) DrivePool will write to the feeder disk and one other disk in the system (the disk with the most free space, or one designated by some other plug-in).

There is currently no notion of "duplicate on a re-balance". This might be something to consider adding to the balancing framework.

The closest thing that you can do now is turn off real-time duplication. That will write one copy to your single feeder disk, and it will move it to the archive disks and duplicate everything once a day at night.
  • Thanks - 1 feeder & non real time duplication - that might be the best combination - turning off real time duplication - can you change the frequency of balancing, ie more frequently than once a day at night - maybe hourly?

You can't make it balance more than once a day at specific times.

However, you can set limits as to when balancing will take place. In your case, it might be useful for you to set a GB limit. In other words, you might want it to start balancing immediately after 100GB is on the feeder drives.

You can set this up in Balancing... -> Settings

In particular, you would want to use the Or if at least this much data needs to be moved balancing trigger.

You can also make sure that it doesn't balance more often than some X hours.

So you might be wondering, what happens if the Feeder drive fills up?

You won't receive out of disk space messages, DrivePool will simply switch to the next best disk to use (as one with the most free space or one designated by some other plug-in).

If you really want to balance every hour. You can set the balancing trigger to something really low like 1GB with Balance immediately and  Not more often than every 1 hour.
