Thank you,

Moving HS from external to internal SATA

edited November 2011 in DrivePool

Hi.

I'm replacing one of my 1 TB disk with a 3 GB one on my HS2011. However, all 6 internal SATA ports are open. So my thought was to do the following:

1. Add new 3 TB disk to e-SATA port.

2. Add 3 TB disk to Drive Pool.

3. Remove old 1 TB disk from Drive pool.

4. Remove old 1 TB disk from server.

5. Move new 3 TB disk from e-SATA port to free internal SATA port.

I'm a bit worried about step 5. Does DrivePool support moving a HD in the Drive pool from an e-SATA port to an internal port without loosing the data?

  • Worst case the drive will show up invalidated on the internal SATA port and you'll just have run a quick check on it.  You won't lose your data.

DrivePool doesn't operate at the physical port level, so it doesn't matter if you move a disk between ports (even between SATA and USB). Just remember to power down the server unless it is capable of hot-swapping SATA ports.

And for bonus karma, I have tested this. No problems. :)

Thanks for the feedback. It worked like a charm!!! :*
The only problem was to match my four 1 TB drives in Windows and pysically... After a bit try and fail it worked out just fine though. Very nice! :)
