Thank you,

Pool balance after replacing with a new drive

edited December 2011 in DrivePool
I'm running 4133 on my HP EX 485 and one day one of my hard drive had
been found by Scanner 2.0 a lot of bad sectors; so I removed the drive
from the pool and replace with a new drive. Adding successfully a new
drive to a pool and the issues are:

1. Drivepool has an error message that said a missing drive in a pool.

2. Pool balance is report 100% on the new drive but there is no data.

Please advice. Thanks.

    1) I can't remember exactly how to do it, but I believe there's a way to mark the drive as gone...sorry, been too long since I had that issue. (see this thread (http://forum.covecube.com/discussion/170/missing-drive-error-wont-resolve#Item_4 & also http://forum.covecube.com/discussion/115/removing-missing-drives) - you may just need to clear the alert)

    2) There's a thread somewhere that discusses this (http://forum.covecube.com/discussion/233/pool-balance among others).  The new drive will now get all "new" data until it's "free" space is equal to that of the other drives, at which time things will again be spread across all drives.  I'm not a huge fan of this, I'd rather see data shifted over time to the "new" drive so that things continue to get spread across all drives - perhaps this is being addressed in M4.  Anyway, nothing is "wrong", just the way it works.

    Hope that helps.
  • As a follow up to the rebalancing question, I recently added a drive to my server (only my third).  All the drives are 2TB WD drives.  When I added the new drive to the pool, DrivePool dutifully reported that my drives were "66% balanced."  Right next to that was a link to re-balance.  I clicked on the link.

Clicking that link turned out to be a mistake.

The server ran for about 10 minutes dutifully rebalancing, I assume, but eventually froze.  Not only did it freeze, but it did something to the home network preventing any other computer on the segment from communicating, sending me down a path of trying to resolve network problems that didn't really exist.  But that's another story.

After rebooting the server and verifying that I had not lost data, I clicked the link again.  Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.  Same problem after about 10 minutes.

After rebooting the server a few other times just to make sure all was well, I figured there was no point in rebalancing the server, so I just left it.  I did not click on the rebalance link.  This morning I check it out and note that the server apparently has been rebalancing itself, and that I'm now 98% balanced.  Huh.

So why did I click the link?  Why did I need to?  Why is the link there?

My advice:  At least until M4 comes out, or someone can explain what I can do to prevent rebalancing from freezing my server, don't click the rebalance link!  DrivePool apparently rebalances by itself.
