  • Hopefully I'm not leaping to a hasty conclusion, but I'd pick the pool drive. Crashplan has automatic de-duping; if your pool has duplication, then telling it to backup the individual disks would just be more work for the same result.

  • In terms of speed? Except for edge cases that may crop up if you have a pool consisting of some slow and some fast drives, or a bunch of drives connected via a slow usb port, etc, which would have to be dealt with on individual basis, I shouldn't th…
  • @stsmith5150 Many file systems (Windows, DrivePool, etcetera) can perform a "move" operation two different ways: move-via-update and move-via-copy. The idea is that since we're using Explorer to move content directly from folder X to folder Y on the…
  • Hmm. I've been looking for something similar. As you note, Dropbox and the rest would be nice if only they also allowed self-hosted storage rather than insisting on having your files on their servers (encrypted or not). Tonido looks interesting - ht…
  • (edited 2012-04-24 re Client Computer Backups folder)(edited 2012-06-21 to put the reboot before instead of after changing drive letter, apparently less chance of WHS leaving empty folders behind)
  • If nothing is currently shared in the pool, you can simply use Disk Management to change the letter. It will warn about open files, so check you don't have anything open before proceeding. Afterwards, immediately reboot. If your pool contains shares…
  • Nope, nevermind, forgot to activate that install.
  • Hmm, no, this is a bug, I'm encountering the same problem since upgrading to 6008 - I can create files but not folders in the DP drive.
  • Ah, interesting. The DrivePool drive is not a NTFS volume, but it does try to act like one. However, there does appear to be something going on (or perhaps more accurately, not going on) with last-modified dates on folders. Thanks JASII. I've got to…
  • When you uninstall drivepool, the \poolpart.* folders on the pooled drives are not removed, as they contain your pooled files. So if you want to add the old pooled drives to a new pool without adding the old pooled files, you'd have to delete - or j…
  • To set friendly (not original, but WHS/DP friendly) permissions on a folder: * use Explorer to view the folder on the DP drive* bring up its context menu (usually right-click), go to Properties, Security tab, Advanced, Owner, Edit* choose Administra…
  • Ah, okay. DrivePool is currently only compatible with:* Windows Home Server 2011* Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials* Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials I don't know if Covecube intends to release a version that would run on 2008 R…
  • Um, just checking: by Windows Home Server 2008 R2, do you mean Windows Home Server 2011? WHS 2011 is indeed 2008 R2 under the hood (more or less) with WHS glued on top, but as a product there is no "WHS 2008 R2".
  • In the light of morning after what must've been some badly needed sleep, I've realised I worded the port multiplier effect on performance VERY badly: Performance *of individual ports* would be *consumed* (not divided) by the *total throughput* (not …
  • Hi griffo, that looks interesting. For those of us less technically-inclined (or simply time-challenged), can you recommend any quick-and-dirty guides to setting up such a connection?
  • Hmm. You'll also have to check that your motherboard/cards support having a port multiplier attached; not all do.
  • EDIT: I worded this really badly. Bad guru, no cookie! See my later post instead. Keep in mind that a port multiplier only multiplies the number of ports, not the performance - that gets divided instead (by the number of drives you attach). You coul…
  • The bad news: you can't simply join two motherboards via sata, it doesn't work that way. The good news: you can turn the second server into a case full of additional discs for your first server. The fine print: you'll need to spend some money on one…
  • Back around M3 the idea of being able to control whether DP kept files in a folder together was discussed, but I don't know if it's still on the todo list. My personal hope is that we may get access (by API? script logic? something) to DP's balancin…
  • Since (as far as I know) DP actually doesn't split by file extension, I suspect what's actually happening is due to the relative sizes of the files. Most flac files are very large, while most jpg files aren't; the flac files are probably tripping th…
  • Hi John, just to note you've posted in the BitFlock forum rather than the DrivePool forum. You can change this by clicking Edit on your first post in the discussion thread and changing the category from BitFlock to DrivePool.
  • Hi, yes, drivepool does allow pooled drives that aren't in use to spin down.
  • Sadly, MS had some great ideas but blew the delivery when they built WHS 2011's backup wizard. The gory details: http://gcoupe.wordpress.com/2011/03/05/i-dont-believe-it-2/ Basically, if your backups are over 2TB, use something else.
  • Paaland's right (and thanks Paaland, you've nailed the best reason not to pool the client database backup - insert my best facepalm pose here for not realising it sooner). This is an edge case where you don't want to use the pool: when you have a la…
  • You've got it exactly right. Note that currently, you can only change whether duplication is enabled for a folder when that folder is shared via the dashboard (use "Add a folder", not the similar "Add a folder to the Pool", and "Browse" to find the…
  • A few people have had trouble with removing bad drives, but (a) usually a pull and replace works just fine if you've got duplication on, (b) when it has got stuck, Alex has been excellent with support (and has added fixes to subsequent versions, q.v…
  • Q: What would benefit me more redundancy or a backup? A: It depends on your needs. If your dominant concern is drive failure, I'd say redundancy is better, while if your dominant concern is user error or malware, I'd say backup is better. If it's a …
  • TL,DR: Drivepool "backs up" against drive failure (and does that very well), not viruses or user error. It all depends what we choose to mean by "backup". English being the kind of language that grabs other languages, drags them into alleys and beat…
