  • Hmm, good point, if it's intended that he will plug the USB disk into the server itself, then you could do the following: Plug in the disk. Using the dashboard, add a shared folder that points to the disk. WHS will automatically make this share avai…
  • I don't know if shadow copies will be supported on the pool drive at release, but I do suggest the use of third-party apps to backup the pool rather than the built-in WHS wizard. See also http://forum.covecube.com/discussion/442/drivepool-backup-to-…
  • If you're using the built-in WHS 2011 Server Backup Wizard, I'll just say its capabilities are... limited. Personally, I wouldn't use it for anything more than backing up the operating system and the computer backups folder (and even the latter only…
  • If all he needs is a manually-activated backup, and he has a Windows PC with robocopy, perhaps an "Open Me To Backup.bat" file on his USB disk that contains lines similar to:    robocopy "\\server\foldertobackup" ".\destinationfolder" /mir /b If you…
  • There's a newer build now available, 5752.http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool#Download_.2F_Install
  • Hi rubenhak, you should have c:\programdata\microsoft\windows server\logs\  InstallAddin.log  StableBit.DrivePool.Server.log See also http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool#Troubleshooting_and_reporting_bugs
  • That sounds more like a balancing issue than a duplication issue? Of my six duplicating pooled folders, one spans four disks, three span five disks, and two span seven disks; none of them are evenly distributed in terms of actual space used, but the…
  • Which build did you previously have installed?
  • Yogimax, *please* contact Alex and submit your DrivePool logs. The only reason the program is available is because we're testing it - it's important that we find out whether/how DrivePool deleted your files, because that's the exact opposite of what…
  • As you mention shadow volume copies, I take it the files are also missing from the physical disks? Do the physical disks, that appear empty, still report free space as if the files were still there? Can you boot from a "Live" CD and check the physic…
  • Hi harshw,DrivePool is disk-aware. If it's duplicating across two partitions on the same disk, please file a bug report.Duplicated folders have 2 copies. Future versions may allow for this to be user-selectable.DrivePool happily accepts >2TB disk…
  • To do so, please visit http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool#Troubleshooting_and_reporting_bugs
  • Keep in mind, "low double-digits" includes 49.99 - it's probably rather optimistic of me to think it will be the same price as Scanner. Alex makes it *look* simple, but writing a kernel-level, disk-pooling, NTFS-friendly, Windows-based file system c…
  • Based on Alex's forum posts so far, while he's avoided stating any actual figures it should be in the competition's ballpark, which to me seems to be in the low double-digits range, at least for home servers. Stablebit Scanner is USD 24.95, so I'm h…
  • Hmm. In disk management, when this happens, are the physical drives still present and accessible? Any SMART errors? High drive temperatures?
  • That looks like a real headache. Perhaps it might be best to contact Alex directly via http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool#Troubleshooting_and_reporting_bugs
  • Perhaps submit an I/O error report with your logs directly to Alex via  http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool_Log_Collection ?
  • Build 5635 is now out, does it fix the problem?
  • Might be best to ask Alex directly: http://stablebit.com/contact
  • Executive summary: M4 has only just come out; Alex is working flat-out fixing bugs as he and the community finds them. For production use - i.e. if your job is on the line because you can't get work done while 6TB restores from backup - wait until D…
  • Log files, how to obtain them and how to send them can be found here: http://wiki.covecube.com/StableBit_DrivePool#Troubleshooting_and_reporting_bugs The problems with offline syncing would probably fall under the header of "I/O Errors". Since it's …
  • The one Alex mentioned as the reason for him pulling the download link was not migration related. http://forum.covecube.com/discussion/comment/1517#Comment_1517
  • I'm not sure that there is a need for a port to Win 8 since pooling functionality is essentially built-in. Also, a port to older OSes doesn't make sense as they're going out the door. I think that depends on how easy or hard it is to port DrivePool …
  • It's been covered before, but yes, the backup wizard that comes with WHS 2011 can only use one target disk and can only handle up to 2TB of source disk(s).
  • It should be. DrivePool M3 runs "above" NTFS while the Windows defrag API runs "in" or "below" it (depending on your point of view).
  • The option is in the StableBit DrivePool tab on the WHS dashboard, "DrivePool Settings".
  • I'm a little confused myself. What nightly builds?
  • I can't find it, but I *dimly* remember someone, somewhere, commenting about DP shares (as of M3) not having a full cifs implementation. If the M4 rewrite now allows WHS to natively handle the sharing side of things, then that problem should go away…
  • Noteworthy tidbits from Alex in the blog comments: (re adding server folders into the pool) "M4 was deeply re-designed to address folder moving issues."(re moving from M3 to M4) "There will be an upgrade path."
  • disappointed said:"This is my point, M3 was so close a number of bug fixes and additions and it would have been GTG. But now who knows how months of testing are ahead, and the end result will be a clone of an existing product, only DP will be 6 to 1…
